The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, bringing an end to the speculation surrounding the leadership choice.
Expressing her gratitude, Gupta acknowledged the party’s leadership and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting her with this responsibility. She will officially take the oath of office on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Ramlila Maidan.
BJP Returns to Power in Delhi
The BJP made a strong comeback in the Delhi Assembly elections, securing 48 seats and reclaiming control after nearly three decades. The party’s decision to appoint a woman as Chief Minister was in line with earlier discussions within the leadership. Among the potential candidates considered for the role were Parvesh Verma, Shikha Roy, Vijender Gupta, and Satish Upadhyay.
Rekha Gupta emerged victorious from the Shalimar Bagh constituency, securing 68,200 votes and defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by a margin of 29,595 votes.
Who is Rekha Gupta?
Gupta has been actively involved in politics since her student days. She previously served as the general secretary and president of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) under the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). She held the position of DUSU president from 1996 to 1997.
Her political journey continued when she was elected as a councillor from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007. She was re-elected in 2012, strengthening her position within Delhi’s political landscape.
AAP Loses Its Hold on Delhi
After a decade in power, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced a major setback, losing the mandate of the people. The BJP’s victory in the Delhi Assembly elections mirrored its success in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, reinforcing its stronghold in the capital.
With Rekha Gupta at the helm, the BJP is set to implement its vision for the city, marking a significant shift in Delhi’s political scenario.
