Family tragedy in Huntsville: three dead in reported shooting as SIU launches investigation

In a tragic incident, three family members were found dead after a reported shooting in a Huntsville home on Friday night. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were alerted to a residence on Highview Drive shortly before 9 p.m. following reports of a barricaded individual and a shooting. Authorities later discovered the bodies of three individuals, including the armed suspect.

OPP stated there is no ongoing threat to public safety but advised residents near Highview Drive to expect a heightened police presence throughout the weekend. The identities of those involved have not been released.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the province’s police watchdog, shared further details on Saturday, reporting that a 52-year-old man contacted police, stating he had harmed two family members and was armed. OPP swiftly dispatched crisis negotiators and the Emergency Response Team, setting up a secure perimeter while communicating with the man by phone.

When communication ceased, officers used a drone to survey the home, discovering the bodies of two women and a man. The exact cause of death remains unknown.

The SIU, responsible for investigating incidents involving police that result in death or serious harm, has assigned six investigators to the case, including two forensic specialists. A postmortem examination is scheduled for Monday. The SIU urges anyone with relevant information to contact its investigators at 1-800-787-8529 or online at SIU’s appeals website.
